For nearly 2 weeks, a "blocking high" over the UK
prevented Atlantic fronts from reaching Ireland,
giving me 13 days dry sunshine and wind from the
South-East. On 29 May the first of these fronts
finally got through, giving gentle rain. People
in the South of Ireland had been praying for rain.
The Irish Times said: "1 June 1990: Warmest May
on record, particularly in West and South, and
below average rain"
